The village is built on a 400ft cliff with narrow cobbled streets leading down to a 14thC harbour. This fishing village has hardly changed in the last 300 years. Sledges and donkeys are the only means of transport through the village. A visitor centre provides modern facilities and includes an audiovisual programme. The modest charge covers provision of facilities and contributes to the upkeep of the village. This ancient fishing village is mentioned in the Doomsday book (c.1100 A.D.) and it is probable that a settlement existed before that, in Saxon times. Visit it now and you can still experience the tranquil pace of life of two hundred years ago - it will leave you with lifetime memories. There is only pedestrian access to the village and this is by way of a path leading from the Clovelly Visitor Centre at the eastern end of the car park. As you walk down the tumbling cobbled street you will notice dates on some cottages, and this marks the restoration work carried out by a great benefactress and previous owner of the village - Mrs. Christine Hamlyn
