On display are the mills, presses and vats used in making cider and country wines, with an illustrated step-by-step guide to the process. Our winery sells our wide range of ciders, country wines, traditional liqueurs and local products. Visitors are welcome to sample our products (free of charge). No formal tours given. At the Lyme Bay Winery we are passionate about keeping the craft of West Country cidermaking alive. During the Autumn we ferment the freshly pressed juice of old-fashioned cider apple varieties, such as Kingston Black, Dabinett, Yarlington Mill, Michelin and Tremlett's Bitter. Our apples are generally grown within twenty miles of the Winery, and this gives our cider a distinctive local flavour. Combining traditional cidermaking skills with modern production techniques, we produce a range of quality, full-flavoured traditional and contemporary ciders. Our Jack Ratt traditional range is named after the notorious Lyme Bay smuggler Jack Rattenbury (1778 - 1844). Jack Ratt operated along the Lyme coast, from Weymouth to Topsham. He was often in trouble with the Customs and Excise, and would hide smuggled goods along the coast in secret spots and safe houses and recover them at a later date when the coast was clear. Our traditional Scrumpy and Vintage ciders take inspiration from this colourful local character, and are available in flagons, bottles and direct from the barrel at our Winery Shop.
